Lyceum Series: Franky Gonzalez –Generating New Plays: Character, Conflict & Endings

April 18 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm CDT

Welcome to the lyceum. These free, monthly workshops are held on the third Saturday of the month, and offer writers of every genre and skill level an opportunity to learn, experiment and develop their craft. We hope you’ll join us!

This workshop introduces the fundamentals of playwriting through a series of fast-paced creative exercises designed to generate characters, settings, and dramatic situations. Participants explore empathy, perspective, and personal experience through monologue work while also experimenting with different approaches to structuring and resolving a play’s ending. The session concludes with practical guidance on how emerging playwrights can begin engaging with the broader theatrical community and development landscape.

Appearances include The Lark, Sundance, Ojai Playwrights Conference, Berkeley Rep, NNPN, Urbanite, Visión Latino, Orchard Project, New Harmony Project, LAByrinth Theater, Playwrights Center, Ars Nova, Latinx Theatre Commons, Seven Devils, Sewanee, Road Theatre, and Ammunition Theater, among others. Awards: Risk Theatre Modern Tragedy Grand Prize, the Judith Royer Award, the Crossroads Project Diverse Voices Playwriting Initiative Award, and co-recipient of the MetLife Nuestras Voces Latino Playwriting Award.
