More than a dozen winning poems came from schools The Writer's Garret provided Poetry Workshops to last year! Joining again with Dallas Public Library to promote Express Yourself: Youth Poetry Competition, we're offering FREE Poetry Workshops, bringing poets to your school through our WINS: Writers in Neighborhoods & Schools program! The competition is categorized by grade and open to ALL Dallas students 2nd through 12th grade. Our workshops are tailored to your class and your students by poets dedicated to encouraging blossoming writers.
Poems submitted to the competition will be judged separately in the following grade categories: 2nd-5th, 6th-8th and 9th-12th.
All qualified poems will be judged on originality and finalists will be notified by mail by March 31, 2019.
Sixty Finalists will be invited to an award ceremony and have their work published by the Dallas Public Library in a bound anthology! Each finalist will receive a medal and a copy of the poetry anthology and one finalist will receive the Joe M. Doris Russell Dealey Fund Award of Achievement. The school with the most student entries based on percentage of total enrollment will receive a trophy to display for one year.
