See & Say: Writing In Response To Visual Art with Joe Milazzo

April 27 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm CDT

Language, like paint or clay, is an artistic medium. Consequently, one of the best ways to explore language’s unique qualities – and the effects they can have on readers – is by writing about other forms of art. In this workshop, participants will:

  • Interact with the visual art on display at Full City Rooster.
  • Learn about the history of ekphrasis: the art of writing about art.
  • Experiment with a variety of approaches to putting their experiences looking, reacting to, and thinking about that art into words.

Participants will have an opportunity to share their original work and receive feedback on it during this session.

Joe Milazzo is a writer, editor, educator, and designer. He is the author of the novel Crepuscule W/ Nellie (Civil Coping Mechanisms) and two full-length poetry collections: The Habiliments (Apostrophe Books) and Of All Places In This Place Of All Places (Spuyten Duyvil). His most recent book, Words in Danger of Falling Out of the Vocabulary (Galileo Press), is a collaboration with poet and musician Eric Lindley and visual artist Miwa Matreyek.
You can also find Joe’s writings in the journals Black Warrior ReviewBOMBDenver QuarterlyFencePuerto del SolTexas Review, and elsewhere.

Joe is also the Founder/Editor-in-Chief of Surveyor Books. He lives and works in Dallas, TX, where he was born and raised.
