DESCRIPTION:Fall is an endlessly evocative time\, a season ripe with inspiration for poetry\, essays\, and stories. Join Teaching Artist in residence Lisa Huffaker for a nature walk of observation\, reflection and sensory experience\, then return to The Garret to write and share your experiences with the group. \nNote: Writing In Nature will include moving through areas that are sometimes minimally affected by the conditions of the weather\, and uneven surfaces. The walk and workshop will take place rain or shine (severe weather excluded). \nLisa Huffaker creates poetry\, collage\, and assemblage. A finalist for Dallas’ Poet Laureate\, she is a frequent visiting artist at the Nasher Sculpture Center\, a recent C3 Visiting Artist at the Dallas Museum of Art\, and creator of White Rock Zine Machine\, a micropublishing project offering artist’s books through sculptural vending machines. Her poetry appears or is forthcoming in 32 Poems\, Diode\, Spillway\, THRUSH\, Tupelo Quarterly\, and elsewhere. Her multimedia installation\, Code Room\, is currently on view at Ro2 Art. Though she would have loved to be widely read and appreciated\, she was too modest to scale the walls of the publishing world. Thus her chosen form was the letter and her audience close friends and family\, including the poet Naomi Nye and the essayist Marion Winik. For decades\, her often lengthy missives continued to delight her correspondents\, blending observation\, storytelling\, humor\, praise\, and accounts of her deep attachment to the land and animals that surrounded her in the rural Southwest. \nBefore Ann’s death in 2019 at the age of 64\, Naomi and Marion promised her they would pull together a book from thousands of pages left in their care. They selected the very best of Ann Alejandro\, added commentary\, and organized the material into chapters with titles like Faith\, Motherhood\, Land\, Snakes\, Pain\, and Love. \nI Know About a Thousand Things: The Writings of Ann Alejandro of Uvalde\, Texas is an extraordinary collection of writing put together by two longtime literary friends in tribute to a third. SUMMARY:I Know About A Thousand Things: Letter Writing as a Spark for Creativity
DESCRIPTION:This three-hour workshop centers on I Know About A Thousand Things: The Writing of Ann Alejandro of Uvalde\, Texas\, a collection of excerpts from Ann’s letters and other occasional writing. It is led by the book’s co-editors\, Naomi Shihab Nye and Marion Winik\, longtime friends of the author\, and each other\, and writers themselves. \nIn putting the book together\, Winik and Nye came to suspect that it is possible for any writer to access rare power\, intimacy and candor by addressing a specific person directly\, rather writing for the larger\, undefined audience of literature in general. Even the subject matter that comes to mind is often different\, framed by the relationship of the letter writer to its recipient. To explore these ideas with other writers\, they designed this workshop. \nThe class will begin with a discussion of the book\, followed by four or five epistolary exercises in both prose and poetry formats. Each exercise is seeded by a passage from the book we will look closely at on the day of class. SUMMARY:Lyceum Series: April Sojourner Truth Walker – Re-Imaging Urban Revitalization Through Haiku
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the lyceum. These free\, monthly workshops are held on the third Saturday of the month\, and offer writers of every genre and skill level an opportunity to learn\, experiment and develop their craft. We hope you’ll join us!\n“What place\, what words\, what memories should I trust? Which direction will take me home?\nFrom Camille T. Dungy’s Writing Home \nThere is a fine line between revitalizing and gentrifying urban communities – often the latter wins\, re-housing\, re-packaging and re-moving the original residents and their stories. In this workshop\, we underscore the vital in re-vitalization – the people who call these communities home in spite of blight. \nThe brevity of haiku allows us to focus on showing rather than telling. We’ll use haiku paired with photography to unearth buried histories and re-image Dallas through the lens of all its citizens. By the end of the workshop\, participants will have created a communal collage piece as a new monument to the urban Dallas landscape. \nApril Sojourner Truth Walker is a Dallas native\, who studied at Emory University in Atlanta and Hollins University in Virginia. Before starting her writing coaching company – A Little More Truth\, LLC – in April of 2020\, she worked for seven years as a Senior Project Manager at AT&T. April also served as an Adjunct Professor at Oklahoma City Community College teaching a myriad of classes in the Humanities from 2016-2022. We hope you’ll join us!\n“Above all\, I craved to seize… the whole essence of some situation that was in the process of unrolling itself before my eyes” –Henri Cartier-Bresson \nIs a poem a documentary or an art object? If the goal of poetry is separate from that of journalism\, then as a way of representing reality\, a poem probably most closely resembles a photograph. While there are certainly differences between visual art and the written word\, I believe that photography can teach us a lot about writing poetry. Both photographs and poems attempt to capture the most crucial elements of a situation or event to make it “come alive” on the page and in the mind of the audience\, and both are tasked with the near-impossible challenge of representing the complexity of lived experience in static media. Most importantly\, both forms depend on the careful selection of signs and symbols within a situation to convey its meaning. In this generative workshop\, we will explore the ways we can learn from the techniques photographers use to create unforgettable photographs to help us better capture authentic moments in poetry. \nKim Nall is a poet and educator from Dallas\, Texas. She holds a BA in Communication Studies from the University of North Texas and an MFA in Creative Writing (poetry) from Carlow University\, where she co-emcees the Raising Our Voices Alumni Reading Series. Her work has appeared in Poetry Quarterly\, Red Wheelbarrow\, The Texas Observer\, at the Dallas Museum of Art\, and elsewhere. Whether you choose to grow poems entirely from found language\, or build a word collection to catalyze your writing one surprise at a time\, the language all around us is a motherlode\, if you know how to dig. \nLisa Huffaker integrates poetry\, visual art\, and performance in hybrid forms. Pegasus Contemporary Ballet recently premiered Words For a Resonant Space\, a new dance work built on her poetry\, and Pierce Planetarium recently featured her hybrid of poetry\, full-dome art projections\, and music. SUMMARY:Langston Hughes' Weary Blues LIVE
DESCRIPTION:Weary Blues is an album by poet Langston Hughes\, recorded in March 1958 in New York and was released on the MGM label in 1959. Hughes recites several of his poems\, from his 1926 debut collection by the same name\, over jazz accompaniment composed and arranged by Leonard Feather and Charles Mingus. It was later reissued on Verve Records.\nThe gritty poems\, all featuring the rhythms of daily Black life in Harlem\, swing between narrative and lyric with a sometimes breezy\, sometimes dirge-like reverberations. Originally from Nebraska\, Rebecca has been active on the Dallas music scene for over ten years. Comfortable in both classical and contemporary styles\, she can be found in a variety of performance settings\, most notably playing with her band\, Plus One Jazz Group. Previously\, she collaborated with writer-lyricist David Parr on two original works for theater: The Great White Way\, a full-length musical; and A Most Happy Stella\, a through-composed mini-musical jazz parody of A Streetcar Named Desire. These works have been performed at theater festivals in Dallas and New York. Most recently\, Rebecca contributed to The Pollinators\, a new musical under development by local playwright Carol Crittenden. \n Thaddeus Ford II (trumpet) is a sixth-generation jazz musician from New Orleans. He began playing the trumpet at age 8\, eventually enrolling in New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) for high school. Following graduation\, Thaddeus and his father enrolled in the music program at Southern University in Baton Rouge where they studied together under jazz educator and clarinetist Alvin Batiste. A year later\, he and his father transferred to The University of New Orleans (UNO) to study under Ellis Marsalis\, and\, after two semesters at UNO\, Thaddeus joined the brass-hop group\, Coolbone\, with whom he played for five years. \n  \nDr. Joyce Hsu (trombone) holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from Texas Tech University\, a master’s degree in Trombone Performance and Pedagogy from Oklahoma State University. A native of Taiwan\, she also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the oldest and most prestigious art college in her country\, National Taiwan University of Arts. She has performed with the Rio Bravo Trombone Quartet\, El Paso Jazz Collective\, the salsa group Azúcar\, and the El Paso Winds. Dr. Hsu served as the Director of Trombone Ensembles at the University of Texas at El Paso\, where she coached the UTEP Trombone choir\, which was invited\, under her direction\, to perform at the 2019 Big 12 Trombone Conference and the 2020 Texas Music Educators Association Conference. \nQuraysh Ali Lansana (vocals) is author of over twenty books in poetry\, nonfiction and children’s literature. Lansana is currently a Tulsa Artist Fellow and a Visiting Associate Professor of English/Creative Writing at the University of Tulsa. He was formerly a Lecturer in Africana Studies at Oklahoma State University-Tulsa where he also served as Director of the Center for Truth\, Racial Healing & Transformation. Lansana is Executive Producer of KOSU/NPR’s Focus: Black Oklahoma monthly radio program\, which is a recipient of a 2022 duPont-Columbia Award\, a 2022 NAACP Image Award\, a 2022 Oklahoma Society of Professional Journalists Award and was a Peabody Award nominee. Lansana is also the recipient of a 2022 Emmy Award\, a 2022 Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters Award and a 2022 National Educational Telecommunications Association Public Media Award for his roles as host and consultant for the OETA (PBS) documentary film “Tulsa Race Massacre: 100 Years Later.” Lansana is a three-time International Regional Magazine Award-winning Contributing Editor for Oklahoma Today magazine. Come watch as moderator Alex Temblador interviews 3 local writers as they sample some local salsas that will have their tastebuds feeling *extremely* lit.\n\nAmanda Churchill is the author of The Turtle House (Harper Books). Her work has been featured in Lit Hub\, Hobart Pulp\, Witness and other outlets. She was a Writer’s League of Texas 2021 Fellow\, has received support from Tin House and Community of Writers\, and holds a master’s degree in creative writing from the University of North Texas. She lives in Keller\, Texas\, with her family. \n  \nKatie Condon is the author of Praying Naked\, winner of the 2018 Charles B. Wheeler poetry prize. Kendra Greene is author of the illuminated essay collections No Less Strange or Wonderful and The Museum of Whales You Will Never See. She became an essayist under the auspices of a Fulbright grant to Korea\, and a book artist at the University of Iowa Center for the Book. Her work has been presented at the Smithsonian\, exhibited at The Reading Room\, collected as far away as Qatar\, translated into French and German\, and vended from the White Rock Zine Machine for 25 cents a pop. Her nonfiction appears in publications from Atlas Obscura to Zyzzyva\, including Freeman’s\, The Guardian\, Nautilus\, Orion\, and The Wall Street Journal. After fellowships at Harvard’s Library Innovation Lab\, Yaddo\, MacDowell\, Dobie Paisano\, and The American Library in Paris\, she currently teaches epistolary literature as Visiting Professor at the University of Missouri. \n  \nAlex Temblador is the award-winning author of Writing An Identity Not Your Own\, Half Outlaw\, and Secrets of the Casa Rosada.
