SUMMARY:Lyceum Series: Lauren Brazeal Garza - Writing Our Memories As Poems
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the lyceum. These free\, monthly workshops are held on the third Saturday of the month\, and offer writers of every genre and skill level an opportunity to learn\, experiment and develop their craft. We hope you’ll join us!\n\nNow more than ever\, poetry allows us to speak of our own experiences on our terms. Unlike prose-based memoir\, which is often preoccupied with the facts of an event\, or when things take place on a timeline\, the poetry of memory can instead focus on the feelings and senses of a memory’s architecture\, and the unique ways our memories connect to one another. \nIn this two-hour generative workshop\, we will study and discuss techniques used by a variety of poets who have written their own stories and experiences in interesting ways including Yusef Komunyakaa and Jenn Givhan. You will also draft one poem that experiments with sharing a memory or experience. \nAbout Lauren Brazeal Garza: \nLauren Brazeal Garza is the author of five books of poetry and fiction including her memoir-in-verse\, Gutter (YesYes Books\, 2018)\, which chronicles her homelessness as a teenager. She earned her M.F.A in creative writing from Bennington College\, and her Ph.D. in Literature from The University of Texas at Dallas. She teaches literature and creative writing at The University of Texas at Dallas. \n\n  \n  \nRSVP\n\n\n \n \n \n \n URLThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n How many in your party?(Required)12345678Zip Code(Required) \n \n \n \n Please Enter Your Home Zip Code

SUMMARY:Ralph Ellison: The Soul Of A Marxist – A Talk By Quraysh Ali Lansana
DESCRIPTION:Ralph Ellison\, author of what many consider to be the greatest American novel of the 20th Century\, was a complicated man. Brilliant\, yet complex. Born in 1914 in the deeply segregated neighborhood of Oklahoma City known as “Deep Deuce\,” Ellison experienced the poverty and struggle of racism before he could read and experienced profound tragedy at two-years of age.  A multi-talented\, curious boy into young manhood\, Ellison was immersed in both the second-hand welfare and first-hand rage of White people. As Ellison experienced success he possessed a seriousness\, a soberness\, and what some in the Black Arts Movement considered a pompous disposition. How could Ralph Ellison be both a socialist and an elitist at the same time? \nScholar and poet Quraysh Ali Lansana visits Dallas for a talk on the tension between Ellison’s private thoughts and history and his public success and renown. Read his interview on Ellison. \nQuraysh Ali Lansana is author of over twenty books in poetry\, nonfiction and children’s literature. Lansana is currently a Tulsa Artist Fellow and a Visiting Associate Professor of English/Creative Writing at the University of Tulsa. He was formerly a Lecturer in Africana Studies at Oklahoma State University-Tulsa where he also served as Director of the Center for Truth\, Racial Healing & Transformation. Lansana is Executive Producer of KOSU/NPR’s Focus: Black Oklahoma monthly radio program\, which is a recipient of a 2022 duPont-Columbia Award\, a 2022 NAACP Image Award\, a 2022 Oklahoma Society of Professional Journalists Award and was a Peabody Award nominee. Lansana is also the recipient of a 2022 Emmy Award\, a 2022 Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters Award and a 2022 National Educational Telecommunications Association Public Media Award for his roles as host and consultant for the OETA (PBS) documentary film “Tulsa Race Massacre: 100 Years Later.” Lansana is a three-time International Regional Magazine Award-winning Contributing Editor for Oklahoma Today magazine. A former faculty member of both the Writing Program of the School of
the Art Institute of Chicago
and the Drama Division of
The Juilliard School\, Lansana served as Director of the Gwendolyn Brooks Center
for Black Literature and
Creative Writing at Chicago State University from 2002-2012 and was Associate Professor of English/Creative Writing there until 2014. His most recent books include Killing the Negative: A Conversation in Art & Verse (with Joel Daniel Phillips)\, Opal’s Greenwood Oasis\, the skin of dreams: new and collected poems\, 1995-2018\, The Whiskey of Our Discontent: Gwendolyn Brooks as Conscience & Change Agent) and The BreakBeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip Hop. \nForthcoming titles include a children’s biography of Ralph Ellison\, a memoir on the last decade of his mentor\, Miss Gwendolyn Brooks\, and a series of books on the Black Rodeo. Lansana’s work appears in Best American Poetry 2019. He is a founding member of Tri-City Collective and serves on the Board of Directors of the Philbrook Museum of Art\, Oklahoma Humanities and the Tulsa Press Club. Lansana is a Curatorial Scholar for The Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art and a Curatorial Board Co-Chair for the Ragdale Foundation. He is a Cave Canem Fellow and a member of the first cohort of the Culture of Health Leadership for Racial Healing Fellowship. \nRSVP for Ralph Ellison: The Soul Of A Marxist

SUMMARY:Cake & Prose – Charles' Dickens A Christmas Carol
DESCRIPTION:Cake & Prose returns for the holidays! \nIn December\, we’re celebrating the Charles Dickens’ masterpiece\, A Christmas Carol. Our actors are reading a version of the story abridged by Dickens himself for public readings. And as always\, there will be cake from a local bakery during intermission and a musical performance to conclude the evening. This event is family friendly. \nCake and Prose will take place in Dallas on Friday\, December 13th at Apprentice Oak Cliff. \nA Christmas Carol will be performed by Dani Chambers\, Rob Clare\, Shawn Gann\, and Brina Palencia\, with musical guest Ob. We look forward to seeing you there! \nRSVP below\, with a suggested donation of $10. \nABOUT CHARLES DICKENS\nCharles Dickens is regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. He wrote A Christmas Carol in six weeks and had to pay half the publication costs himself\, since his publisher did not see the value of a Christmas story. The novella has never been out of print since its publication in 1843. A Christmas Carol was his first ever public reading in the Birmingham Town Hall on December 27\, 1852. His first reading was such a success\, he repeated it three days later. Dickens loved to perform A Christmas Carol. He continually edited and adapted the story as a performance piece for several years. \nPERFORMER BIOS  \nDANI CHAMBERS\nDani Chambers is a voice-over actress who specializes in kid voices. She’s been honing her craft since she was just six years old\, and her passion for acting has only grown with time. Dani particularly enjoys theater work\, where she can fully embody a character and bring them to life on stage. \nROB CLARE\nRob Clare was originally an actor with the Royal Shakespeare Company\, then a Staff Director at the UK National Theatre\, and Associate Artistic Director of the major UK touring company\, Compass.  Becoming increasingly interested in differing approaches to working with Shakespearean texts\, and especially verse\, he completed a doctorate in the subject at Oxford University\, and has since become an internationally recognized Shakespeare specialist. \nSHAWN GANN\nShawn Gann is a proud Filipino-American ADR Director\, Voiceover Artist\, and Educator. For most of his career\, Shawn has been a theatre maker in Dallas-Fort Worth that has performed on most major stages\, started several companies\, and has been a producing board/company member with many others; he has also toured nationally and internationally as an actor\, which includes performing in Scotland’s 2019 Festival Fringe in Edinburgh. \nBRINA PALENCIA\nBrina Palencia is an actress working in Dallas and Los Angeles. She’s voiced… a lot of stuff. On camera she is best known for playing Sophia in the CW series Star-Crossed; Ana on Season 4 of The Walking Dead; Jody Evans on Season 7 of Castle; and Kayla Bates in the web series The Troubadoors. Brina can also be seen in several indie films and enjoys writing music. \nMUSICAL GUEST OB\nOb is an artist based between Dallas and Lagos. His debut EP\, !love is filled with thoughtful references\, daring arrangements\, and heartfelt lyrics. Ob cuts across genres to deliver a body of work that calls for its title\, both to ourselves and to others. His message remains clear: love wins in the end. \nStep 1: RSVP (Required)\n\nStep 2: Suggested Donation $10 (Optional)

SUMMARY:The City That Killed The President – A Reading By Author Tim Cloward
DESCRIPTION:The assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22\, 1963\, shocked America. Instantly\, Dallas was blamed for the killing\, labeled “the City of Hate.” In the half century since the president’s murder\, this city’s artists and writers have produced important\, if often overlooked\, work that speaks to the difficult burden of our civic shaming. \nHere are the works of poetry\, theater\, journalism\, art\, the actions of our citizens and political leaders\, all the fragments of our cultural life that address this tortured local history. The City That Killed the President is a window into the soul of Dallas\, a city reluctant to grapple with its past. \n“Tim Cloward has his nerve. The very idea of taking on the psyche of a city as rambunctious and complex—and troubled and tragic—as Dallas would be beyond the courage of most of us\, but Cloward more than rises to the challenge he sets for himself.  The City that Killed the President is a brilliant dissection of this most American of cities\, a particular kind of history in which names\, dates\, and events are merely starting points for peeling back our collective id and ego. The City that Killed the President is one of the best books you will ever read about Dallas\, but you won’t find it on the Chamber of Commerce reading list.” \nBen Fountain\, author of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and Devil Makes Three \n Tim Cloward is a writer/educator who lives in Dallas\, Texas. He holds a Ph.D. in Aesthetic Studies from the University of Texas at Dallas. The founder of the poetry/performance troupe Dancing Tongue\, he has also worked with Poetry Circus and Question Authority\, both acclaimed multi-disciplinary performance ensembles. His work has been seen in a number of publications and he\, along with Patty Turner and David Davis\, published the influential chapbook Three Dallas Poets in 1986. A prominent arts organizer\, he is the former board chair of the North Texas Literary organization\, WordSpace. He teaches Theory of Knowledge classes at Uplift Atlas Academy\, where he is helping establish an International Baccalaureate program for underserved urban students. The first volume of his The City That Killed the President: A Cultural History of Dallas was published by Deep Vellum Press in Sept. 2023. \n  \nRSVP

SUMMARY:Cake & Prose: Kate Khavari
DESCRIPTION:Cake & Prose is back! \nCake and Prose is a unique literary event celebrating genre fiction\, local talent\, and cake. The ingredients are simple: \nThree stories. An author shares three stories — read by three different actors. These stories could be any genre. They could be short stories or excerpts of a longer work.\nThree songs. A musical performance by a guest artist adds another layer to this night of entertainment. Themes can emerge between the stories and songs.\nOne cake. During the intermission\, there is cake. Really good cake from a local bakery. \nMix together and enjoy! \nThis month\, come hear the work of Kate Khavari\, author of A Botanist’s Guide To Society & Secrets – a Saffron Everleigh mystery\, performed by Katelyn Barr\, Jenn Emerson\, and Jacob Trevino\, with musical guest Joe Rogers. \n \nKATE KHAVARI (AUTHOR)\nKate Khavari is the author of fiction ranging from historical mysteries to high fantasy epics. She has her parents to thank for her fascination for historical mysteries\, as she spent the majority of her childhood memorizing Sherlock Holmes’s and Poirot’s greatest quips. She lives in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas with her husband\, two children\, and a lovely garden that contains absolutely no poisonous plants. \n  \n  \nJOE ROGERS (MUSICAL GUEST)\nJoe Rogers is a native Fort Worth pianist and composer. He has master’s degree in music composition from the University of North Texas. A prolific composer\, his work includes both jazz and musical theatre. Currently the resident composer at Hip Pocket Theater\, he was music director and composer at Jubilee Theatre for 20 years. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Tarrant County Live Theater League\, and keeps up a busy schedule of jazz performances in Fort Worth and Dallas\, including a recent concert of his original music with the Fort Worth Civic Orchestra. He has been an important part of Arts 5th Avenue with Gracey Tune since its inception in 2001. \n  \nKATELYN BARR\nKatelyn Barr is a voice and stage actor local to Dallas. Some of her favorite anime voiceover credits include Mina Ashiro in Kaiju No. 8\, Himeno in Chainsaw Man\, and Ryukyu in My Hero Academia. In theatre\, she has been seen in Luckenbooth Theatre’s Little Women (Marmee)\, Imprint Theatreworks’s The Doll (Alma)\, and as a member of the Folding Chairs Comedy Troupe. Katelyn is thrilled and grateful to be participating in her first Cake & Prose event! \n  \nJENN EMERSON\nA sometime actor\, sometime writer\, sometime corporate drone\, and full time weirdo\, Jenn is super happy to be back reading for Cake and Prose. She’s looking forward to eating your words. \n  \n  \n  \nJACOB TREVINO\nJacob Trevino graduated from Texas Christian University with a BFA in Theatre with Emphasis in Acting in 2019. A DFW Native\, Jacob works in Higher Education at Southern Methodist University. Jacob loves reading stories\, playing board games\, tabletop role-playing games\, and supporting the arts. Jacob resides in Arlington\, Texas with his Wife and Dog. \n  \n  \nAbout A Botanist’s Guide To Society & Secrets \nLondon\, 1923. Returning from Paris\, botanical researcher Saffron Everleigh finds that her former love interest Alexander Ashton’s brother\, Adrian\, is being investigated for murder. A Russian scientist working for the English government has been poisoned\, and expired in Adrian’s train compartment. Alexander asks Saffron to put in a good word for Adrian with Inspector Green. Despite her unresolved feelings for Alexander\, Saffron begins to unravel mysteries surrounding the dead scientist. \n\n\nAs if a murder case weren’t enough\, her best friend Elizabeth’s war-hero brother\, Nick\, arrives in town and takes an immediate interest in Saffron. Saffron learns Alexander has been keeping secrets from her\, including a connection to Nick\, who Saffron and Elizabeth begin to suspect is more than he seems. \nWhen another scientist is found dead\, Saffron agrees to go undercover at the government laboratory. Risking her career and her safety\, she learns there are many more interested parties and dangerous secrets to uncover than she’d realized. But some secrets\, Saffron will find\, are better left undiscovered. \n\n\nRSVP

SUMMARY:Lyceum Series - Hannah Smith - No Place Like Home: Poetry Of Place
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the lyceum.\nThese free\, monthly workshops are held on the third Saturday of the month\, and offer writers of every genre and skill level an opportunity to learn\, experiment and develop their craft. We hope you’ll join us!\n  \nA poem is a gesture toward home.\n-Jericho Brown \nAs Brown suggests in his poem “Duplex\,” the act of writing poetry can allow us to reach towards a sense of self & belonging. In this course\, we will consider the relationship between place and home. We’ll look towards the material world around us\, the people in our lives\, our communities\, nature\, and systems of obstruction & oppression as avenues through which to interpret the concept of “home.” We will discuss a selection of poems interpreting “home” in different ways\, and the course will end with a generative writing exercise. \nCheck out the syllabus \nHannah Smith is originally from Dallas\, where she now works for Southwest Review. SUMMARY:The Common Language Project: Ascent - Reading
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, May 19th | 7pm\nFree | RSVP Required\nBorn of a desire to bring the many members of the North Texas poetry community into conversation with each other\, The Common Language Project places participants in the same room and turns them loose to dream. We hope you’ll join us for a reading of some of the poems from the anthology at the beautiful Turner House in Oak Cliff to officially close out this year’s Dallas Is Lit! \nThis year\, we invite you to the ascent. Harrowing or halcyon\, up the stairs or to the stars\, scaling a mountain or soaring in your soul\, humans have sought to rise\, physically and metaphorically\, since we first drew breath. Float into new levels of consciousness\, climb a pyramid\, or rocket beyond the safety of the atmosphere\, then share your journey with us–the risks you brave\, the horizons you’ve crossed\, the view as it’s unfolding before you. \nRSVP (Required)\n\n \n \n \n \n LinkedInThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n Home Zip Code(Required)Please enter a number from 00000 to 99999.How many in your party?(Required)12345678
