SUMMARY:Lyceum Series: L. A. Johnson - Time & Poetic Structure
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the lyceum. These free\, monthly workshops are held on the third Saturday of the month\, and offer writers of every genre and skill level an opportunity to learn\, experiment and develop their craft. We hope you’ll join us!\nPoems are concerned with time—the recounting of events and experience—but are also outside of time\, existing in a place beyond the limits of linear time. Our lives are made up both by what is happening in the moment\, what has happened in the past\, and what will happen in the future\, but how do we write poems that capture this experience of time? In this workshop\, we will explore how to layer multiple times or scenes within a poem\, and how a poem can capture nonlinear time. This workshop will be a mix of lecture\, guided close readings of poems\, and generative writing. In considering time\, we will focus on poetic structure\, considering the many ways the container of the poem can capture at once the past\, present\, and future. Although geared towards poets\, this workshop will be useful for writers of all genres who aim to grapple with the complexities of time in their work. \nL. A. Johnson is the author ofLost Music(Milkweed Editions\, forthcoming 2027) and an Associate Editor of Swirl & Vortex: Collected Poems of Larry Levis (Graywolf Press\, 2026). She holds a PhD from University of Southern California\, where through academic years 2023-25 she was a Mellon Humanities and University of the Future Postdoctoral Fellow. The winner of the 2022 Mississippi Review Poetry Prize\, the 2022 Greensboro Review Poetry Prize\, and the 2021 Arts & Letters Rumi Poetry Prize\, her poems appear in The Atlantic\, Poetry Magazine\, Ploughshares\, and elsewhere. She is currently a Hughes Fellow at Southern Methodist University. Find her online at http://www.la-johnson.com \n  \nRSVP for the Lyceum Series

SUMMARY:Cake & Prose - Judy Liu
DESCRIPTION:Cake and Prose is back in 2026\, and we’re excited to kick the year off featuring local author\, Judy Liu. Come join us at Apprentice Creative Space and hear Liu’s work\, enjoy songs from our musical guest\, Andy Yu—and of course\, to eat cake. \nCake and Prose is a unique\, free literary event with a focus on genre fiction\, local talent\, and cake. The ingredients are simple: \n\n\n\nThree stories. An author shares three stories — read by three different actors. These stories could be any genre. They could be short stories or excerpts of a longer work.\nThree songs. A musical performance by a guest artist adds another layer to this night of entertainment. Themes can emerge between the stories and songs.\nOne cake. During the intermission\, there is cake. Really good cake from a local bakery.\n\nMix together and enjoy! RSVP below! The event is free\, but donations to support Writer’s Garret are greatly appreciated. \n\n \nJUDY LIU (AUTHOR)\nInspired by her love of Marvel\, sci-fi\, old Taiwanese dramas\, and ridiculous anime\, Judy scribbles mini-stories wherever she can (and subsequently forgets them!). She graduated from Rice University in Houston\, Texas\, studying history\, Asian studies\, and education. Judy is not unfamiliar with extensive writing\, having published multiple pieces. She spent some time living in rural Japan before working in the legal and compliance sphere. With her debut novel The Vending Portal\, Liu hopes to meaningfully add to Asian American literature to further enrich the YA genre. \nhttps://www.judyliuauthor.com/ \nMIKAELA BAKER (READER)\nMikaela Baker is a SAG-E multi-hyphenated theatre artist here in DFW. Some of her most recent credits include A Streetcar Named Desire (WaterTower Theatre)\, Measure for Measure\, Twelfth Night (Shakespeare Dallas)\, and you can see some of her directing work later this summer at Echo Theatre and Shakespeare Dallas. \n  \n  \nBRANDON WETCH (READER)\nBrandon Wetch holds an MFA in acting\, and has recently appeared as Montano in Othello (Shakespeare Dallas)\, Orsino in Twelfth Night\, and Richmond in Richard III (SSG). Voiceover credits include One Piece\, Spirit Chronicles\, Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom\, Natsume’s Book of Friends\, I Shall Survive Using Potions! and The Legendary Hero is Dead. \nRecent fight direction credits include Assistant FD for Carmen (Dallas Opera)\, Othello (Shakespeare Dallas)\, and FD for Romeo and Juliet\, Much Ado About Nothing\, Richard III\, and Twelfth Night (SSG). \n  \nKATIE WETCH (READER)\nKatie Wetch is an actor for Voice Over\, TV\, Film\, and Theater. They also specializes in Improv\, Motion Capture\, and Stage Combat. \nOriginally from Virginia Beach\, they could always be found running from the beach to the mountains.  Camping\, Hiking or days spent at the beach were some of their favorite pass-times growing up. If they weren’t outside\, they could be found in their room painting murals on walls\, reading anything fantasy-related\, or playing some of her favorite video games. \nANDY YU (MUSICAL GUEST)\nIn the resonant universe of indie music\, Andy Yu emerges as a luminary\, channeling the essence of love into evocative compositions. With his tender melodies and soulful harmonies\, Andy’s sonic tapestry unfurls emotions from the raw exhilaration of new romance to the poignant depths of separation\, captivating listeners with every beat.

SUMMARY:Who's There? Speaker & Voice In Poetry with Logen Cure
DESCRIPTION:In this 3-session workshop\, participants will learn about speaker and voice in poetry. Conventional wisdom says that readers should never assume that the speaker of the poem and the poet are one in the same. This workshop will explore the tensions of this idea\, variations on the relationship between speaker and poet\, and strategies for developing greater control over the poetic voice. Participants will apply concepts from our discussion in composing their own poems. Writers of all levels of experience are welcome! This workshop is designed to be fun and helpful even if you cannot attend all 3 sessions\, so if you’re interested but unable to attend every session\, you should still join us! \nPlease note: this 3-part workshop meets April 18th\, April 25th and May 2nd. \nLogen Cure is a queer poet and educator. She curates Inner Moonlight\, the monthly reading series and podcast at The Wild Detectives in Dallas. She earned her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her debut full-length poetry collection\, Welcome to Midland (Deep Vellum Publishing 2021)\, was shortlisted for the Reading the West Book Awards.
