Found Text with Lisa Huffaker
March 27, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm CDT
Invigorate your poetry by delving into gold-mines of language, already at hand. We’ll dig into found-text, starting from where to find rich source material, then diving into a range of exciting practices, from word-collecting and cloud-seeding, to centos, cut-ups, and erasures. We’ll also spend some time walking the gorgeous, blurry boundary between poetry and visual art. Expect to see eye-opening examples by a number of amazing poets, and come ready with scissors, a glue stick, a pencil, and some text to cut up (you can’t go wrong with magazines, newspapers, and old books.) Whether your next poem crystalizes from only one “found” word, or is grown entirely from stolen language, you will find that found text is a way to keep your imagination eternally surprised!
Lisa Huffaker’s poems appear in 32 Poems, Spillway, The Boiler, Able Muse, and other journals. Her project White Rock Zine Machine offers art and writing through sculptural vending machines. She has been a visiting artist at the Dallas Museum of Art and the Nasher Sculpture Center, and has an installation on view at Ro2 Art. She is currently working on a book-length project, using erasure and collage to sabotage a 1963 anti-feminist marriage manual. http://www.
