Connecting People Through The Power Of Language For 30 Years

In December of 1994, a group of literary-minded individuals came together to create a new organization, dedicated to fostering the education and development of readers and writers in Dallas. Helmed by Thea Temple and National Book Award winner Jack Myers, The Writer's Garret was founded, and in May of 1995, received its nonprofit designation, officially embarking on a journey to help build, sustain and grow the literary landscape of North Texas.

In the 30 years since, The Writer's Garret has reached over 2 million writers, readers, literary enthusiasts and young people through its programs–from the long-running Stone Soup peer critique workshops, where writers of every level come together to develop their work; to youth programs like Writers In Neighborhoods & Schools and the immersive, one-of-a-kind summer adventure Rail Writers; to festivals and presentations like the Dallas Is Lit! festival, welcoming new audiences into the the literary conversation.

At its core, the mission of The Writer's Garret remains about connecting people and building community through the power of language. Whether you're an avid reader and love discussing and hearing about the classics, an aspiring poet looking to develop and hone your craft, a professional writer looking for like-minded community members, or maybe you've never even thought about the literary community before but something caught your interest, you're welcome at The Garret.
